R.Yu.Rakhmatoullin, L.V.Safronova, T.R.RakhmatoullinImage as an epistemological category: definition problems 6

The authors investigate a difficult task to define one of the widely employed con-cepts in epistemology and psychology – 'the image'. Reasoning from the logical rules of scientific definition they state the incorrectness of many definitions of 'image' exist-ing in science and philosophy that render it indistinguishable from 'sign', 'sound', 'sen-sation', 'theory' and other forms of reflectivity. A new definition is offered, which claim the image to be the integrative quality of an aggregate of visual signals, which is sub-jectively felt as modalities structurally identical to the object itself being reflected. This definition serves as the basis for a new classification of images.
